Why Marine Surveys are Important
Buying a boat is as much a financial decision as it is an emotional one. A marine surveyor can offer an unbiased opinion about the condition, value and insurability of the boat you are considering purchasing, while offering unfettered documention that will help steer you on the right course to an enjoyable boating experience.
How to Select the Right Marine Surveyor
In choosing a marine surveyor, be sure you select one who belongs to a professional organization, which provides training and holds its members to published high standards. An experienced and qualified marine surveyor will have a thorough understanding of National Marine Manufacturers Association, Coast Guard, American Boat and Yacht Council, National Fire Protection Association, as well as insurance, state and federal regulations regarding boat construction and numerous onboard systems.
Different Surveys Offered
Insurance Condition and Valuation
Before you can insure a boat of a certain age, length, or value, some boat insurance companies require a marine survey. You typically won’t need one if you’re insuring a new watercraft, but many insurers won’t cover used boats that haven’t been surveyed.
Pre-Purchase Condition and Valuation Survey
The market forces have created a “normal” pre-purchase “condition and value” survey. It’s a nondestructive inspection of the boat to check its condition, check its systems for basic operation and adherence to applicable regulations and standards, look for any warning signs that might recommend a follow-on inspection by a specialist, and determine its overall value. In many ways, the process is analogous to a doctor giving a patient a physical—except for the appraisal.
Damage and Repair Cost Estimates
The uncomfortable truth is that damage to a vessel will happen over the course of ownership which is why having a damage survey to help identify the likely cause and extent of the damage is important. A damage survey primarily focuses on the severity of the damage and how that damage affects the overall value of the boat. Repair estimates are gathered and analized.
